Why Volunteer?

Animal rescue would not be possible without volunteers! Whether your care gives an animal a chance at life in the first hours after rescue, or you experience the joy of seeing them returned to the wild or placed in a loving home, the vital care you provide to Izzie’s Pond animals isn’t just life support for them — but also deeply rewarding to you.

Who Can Volunteer?

We welcome volunteers of all ages and abilities!* Volunteer as an individual or as part of a group. In general:

Adult volunteers should have dependable transportation, be able to lift 25lbs, and be in general good health.  Volunteers working with animals must have a tetanus booster and can not be immune compromised. You cannot volunteer with the birds if you have had a positive TB (tuberculosis) test.

Child volunteers must be over the age of 8, must volunteer with a parent who can provide adult supervision, and not be afraid of animals.

Want to volunteer through a church, youth, or school group? Please email our volunteer coordinator at izziespond.dawn@gmail.com to find out how.

All volunteers must sign a release form.

* We cannot accept court-ordered community service volunteers.

How Can I Help?

We offer a range of volunteer opportunities to account for a variety of interest levels, experience, and time to spare — no matter your age or physical ability.

We regularly schedule volunteer workdays where you can join us for special projects such as goat hoof trimming, chicken deworming, pen building, and other tasks. Join our Izzie’s Pond Volunteer Facebook Group to find out when our next workday is scheduled!

First Responders & Rescue Transport

caught_emuBe trained to arrive on the scene of an injured or orphaned animal, assess whether it needs help, safely capture it, and bring it back to our facility for care. You can also pick up animals that are already contained to transport to our facility, take injured animals to veterinary appointments, from our facility to others or vice versa, or to release sites. Our Safe Capture & Transport Class prepares you to catch an animal with minimal risk to the animal, yourself, and any bystanders.

  • Assess whether the animal actually needs help.
  • Find out what you need for a safe capture and transport. At a minimum, you should have gloves, a net, and a transport kennel.
  • For seriously injured or ill animals, learn how to protect yourself and the animal from further injury or infection.

We take in animals from all over the Upstate, and rely on a broad network of veterinarians and other rescue/rehab facilities, so you can commit as many or as few hours as you can — drive only locally to Greenville, or throughout Greenville, Pickens, Laurens, and Spartanburg Counties… and beyond!

Requirements You must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation of sufficient size to transport medium to large carriers.

Outside Animal Care

volunteers_working2Izzie’s Pond’s resident animals need fresh food and water twice per day, safe confinement each night, and clean cages once per week. By committing to provide our animals with their most basic needs, you can contribute to our animals’ overall wellbeing.

Morning duties can take 1-2 hours and require at least one person (two are optimal for efficiency’s sake). These duties include:

  • Measure out the appropriate amount of species-specific feed.
  • Clean out water bins and fill with fresh water.
  • Observe overall health of animals and refer any who are sick or injured for care.
  • Collect fresh laid eggs from ducks, chickens, and turkeys. (You can keep what you find!)

In summer during the afternoons, volunteers are needed to come and refill water bins with fresh water.

Evening duties can take 1-2 hours and require at least two people.

  • Pen animals in their respective enclosures for overnight safeguarding from predators.
  • Observe overall health of animals and refer any who are sick or injured for care.
  • Refill water bins with fresh water for the overnight.

“Anytime” responsibilities can be done at your convenience! At least twice per month and preferably once a week, we need volunteers to:

  • Muck out old hay from overnight pens and ensure the floor underneath is clean, then lay fresh hay down. You can come and do just one enclosure, or spend a day to take care of them all. This is simple, but dirty, so wear your oldest clothes and a pair of mud boots!
  • The carriers and kennels we use need to be cleaned between each use. This involves hosing out each carrier and/or using a pressure washer — a good summer activity for older teens.

Requirements

Animal rescue is a serious commitment — animal lives depend on your being available! You can plan your volunteer work around any other activities in your daily or weekly life. Reliability is the most important trait we seek in any animal rescue volunteer.

Therefore, please plan to commit to at least one shift per week. Shifts can be split or traded as necessary — be sure to coordinate with other volunteers and the volunteer coordinator.

Finally, you must have reliable transportation on the day you’ve committed to.

Indoor Support

Some Izzie’s Pond animals live indoors, and we need plenty of assistance there too. Some of the daily chores you can help with include:

  • Clean out indoor bird cages.
  • Wash, sanitize, sort and store the baby bottles, nipples, and medical supplies we use to feed and treat baby animals.
  • Help prepare food for baby animals, including mixing formula and starter solids.
  • Help to administer vaccines and dewormers to animal intakes.
  • Wash, dry, and fold laundry — the dozens of blankets and towels we go through each day keeping baby animals comfortable.

Fundraisers

fundraising_piesOur organization is funded entirely on donations, and 100% of proceeds go to the care of our animals.  You can assist us with holding fundraisers, either at the Izzie’s Pond property, at fairs and other events, or even online.

Past fundraiser opportunities have included:

  • The Izzie’s Pond Christmas Store. (Have craft skills? You can help us make things to sell at Christmastime!)
  • Bake sales and craft fairs. Help us staff tables at various events throughout the year to sell goods of your own or others!
  • Set up a GoFundMe or other crowdfunding campaign online. Be sure to let our Community Coordinators know so they can share your links.
  • Lemonade tables and bake sales have been a good way for our child volunteers to collect funds.

Educational Ambassadors

ambassadorsOur Educational Ambassadors have the opportunity to work both on-site and online to teach the public about what we do and how they can help — whether by doing their part to coexist with wildlife on their property, or donating items to help Izzie’s Pond operate.

On Site:

If you are going to school for environmental studies, teaching, or just want to work with the animals this is a great opportunity for you!

  • Visit schools, scout troops and other groups to talk about wildlife and our environment.
  • Serve as a tour guide for school group field trips, senior activity groups, and new volunteers to Izzie’s Pond.

Online:

Help us maintain our online outreach! Your neighborhood Nextdoor community, your personal Facebook profile, even blogs are great places to educate your friends, family and neighbors about dealing with “urban wildlife” adapting to new and existing developments.

  • Refer your neighbors to humane pest control services that emphasize humane eviction over trapping, and reunification of mothers and babies rather than separation.
  • Help your neighbors to identify normal animal behavior and how it’s different from sick and injured animal behavior
  • Educate your neighbors about state laws and local ordinances. For example, did you know it’s illegal to dump domestic pet ducks at public ponds and rivers?
  • Refer your neighbors to Izzie’s Pond when they find sick or injured wildlife.

Source donations through Craigslist and other free classifieds, including Nextdoor. (Just remember to obtain items only in public spaces!)

Our rehabilitation structures need year-round maintenance and improvements. Using instructions we provide or your own expertise, we need regular help with building and maintaining:

  • Raccoon den boxes and soft release pens
  • Feed and water containers
  • Weatherproofing in fall and spring
  • Mend perimeter and enclosure fencing
  • Repair door and fence latches and locks due to warping

braceletsDo you like to sew, knit, crochet, or work with wire? Use your crafting skills to make new items to sell, or for the animals themselves to use!

We are always looking for crafty volunteers year-round to make crafts for fundraising activities. Some examples of arts and crafts have included:

  • Sewn blankets and hammocks for baby raccoons and opossums to sleep in.
  • Christmas ornaments made from feathers and recycled objects
  • Jewelry made with feathers, wire, and beads
  • Garden decor made with wire and recycled objects

We welcome any ideas you bring to us as well!
